I.  Visual Observation/ Exams:

White spots on nails = Zinc Deficiency or maybe B6 to assist in zinc metabolism. Zinc Lozenge, Zinc-S, Zinc Chelate

Ridges on the nails = Consider Iron Deficiency which would usually be a macrocytic anemia; Ferrous-Fumuro Chelate; another consideration is a macrocytic anemia due to deficiency in B12 and Folic acid (Vit C and copper deficiency can also be complicating factors.) Homocysteine Redux

Black under finger or toe nails = Consider yeast, fungus or mold.  Total Probiotics, Total Yeast Redux and reduce sugar and alcohol intake drastically.

Pitting Edema = Look at heart and kidneys. Total Heart I or II, Core Level Kidney, Test for hidden infections and inflammation. Total Yeast Redux, Total Virx, Total Multimune, Total Para, Total Bac-T, Total Inflamm

Cracked tongue = This is referred to topographic tongue and is associated with stress and B complex deficiency. DSF, B-Complex

Cracked corners of mouth = Similar as above.  Another sign of B complex deficiency and stress.  DSF glandular and Herbal, B-Complex

Tender lower left rib cage (1” left, off center) = HCL deficiency.  Hypo-D

Tender 6th inter costal mid nipple line = Another sign of HCL deficiency.  HCL deficiency.  Hypo-D

Rebound Tenderness of the abdomen = peritoneal inflammation.  Be extremely careful and suspect possible appendix rupture.  Be mindful of referring the patient out for further examination.  If Appendicitis is negative and for general intestinal support, consider Total Probiotics, Total Enzymes, L-Glutamine Plus, Total Multimune and Total Inflam

There are more quick observations we will discuss in the future.  This should be very helpful and get you to look at your patients and see what the body is telling you.  It is good to look at each patient SIX DIMENSIONALLY: 1) STRUCTURE, 2) NUTRITION, 3) ELECTROMAGNETIC, 4) EMOTIONS, 5) ALLERGIES OR SENSITIVITIES, 6) TOXINS

Introducing a new Detoxification Cleanse System.

August 9, 2010

Nutri-West has developed a 21 day Detoxification Cleansing System to help eliminate toxins and prevent further damage from the many chemicals and toxic accumulations. This program is soon to be released and was designed to allow the body to heal, nourish and detoxify in perfect alignment with the body’s own processes of natural healing.  A lot of credit for this article and the turn-key system, including a patient guide for pre-cleanse, cleanse and post cleanse goes to Dr. Lisette Beam, who has used this Detoxification System to great success.

Dr. Beam states, “I have used many detoxification programs from all of the major nutrition company’s in the chiropractic wellness landscape over the last ten years. This new detoxification cleanse system by Nutri-West has created better clinical outcomes, easier patient compliance, and increased referrals due to patient satisfaction. From a practitioner’s standpoint, I could not ask for more. This new detoxification cleanse system is above excellent!”

Dr. Beam further states, “This turn-key system is delivered to your door step and will include the nutrition, patient guide booklet, Blender Bottle, and vitamin box.”

I would encourage you as a health care practitioner to start on this cleanse immediately, so you can demonstrate the benefit from this Detoxification Cleansing System for yourself and your patients. This system will help you, your family and your patients renew health by gently eliminating natural toxins and daily metabolic byproducts. Using Nutri-West organic whole food nutrients and dietary program is a way to renew, restore and revive your life.

Many that have already accomplished the Detoxification Cleanse System have experienced:

Improved Weight Management
Gastrointestinal Health
Increased Energy and Vitality
Clearer Skin
Better Digestion
Strengthened Immune System
Clearer Thinking and Better Moods
Improved Response to Allergens
Lessening of Chronic Conditions

Chronic disease can begin without us even noticing due to the toxic environment we live in. We are exposed to pesticides, environmental chemicals, xenoestrogens, preservatives and processed foods on a regular basis through the air we breathe, food we eat and water/liquids we drink. We lose function a little at a time and then one day we are diagnosed with metabolic dysregulation, immune dysfunction, endocrine imbalances and a myriad of joint pains, allergies and other health issues. These conditions usually all stem from a chemical imbalance in the body and can be due to malnutrition, environmental toxins and metabolic byproducts produced in our own bodies. These substances overstress the detoxification system and make it difficult/impossible for the body to keep up with the demands.

Now contemplate the inadequate nutrition available in the Standard American Diet of high fat, sugars, and nutrient depleted vegetables, fruits and grains. This is a recipe for ill health and challenged organ systems. The build up of this toxic load in the body overburdens the detoxification pathways and we get a diagnosis of different conditions and dis-eases now blamed for how we feel.

Examples are xenoestrogens and other widely varied toxins that can cause disturbances in thyroid, pituitary and adrenal glands with their many symptoms and named conditions. Neurotoxins can cause symptoms associated with memory problems, brain fog, depression, anxiety disorders, mental fatigue, visual disturbances, insomnia and irritability.

Metabolic Dysregulation such as Syndrome X, demonstrates Insulin Resistance and sugar dysregulation with its many, many related problems. This set of problems combined with a toxic burden is what sets the stage for high cholesterol, high blood pressure, inflammatory conditions, as well as hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia disorders that lead to diabetes type II.

Toxins interfere with the mitochondria. Metabolic disruptions are seen at the cellular level where toxic damage interferes with cellular energy generation. Therefore, causing fatigue and poor exercise tolerance. Many toxins can also accelerate the aging process by reducing the effectiveness of cellular antioxidant systems.

As you can see, this is a huge subject and is part of what we will demonstrate at the upcoming Nutri-West/Brimhall Seminars. Some of those doing this cleanse during its development lost up to 30 lbs in the 21 days and most felt fabulous.

At each seminar, we are also demonstrating the new Heavy Metal Challenge and introducing Functional Diagnostics. We look forward to seeing YOU Soon.

Brimhall Puzzle Piece - Who Needs Saliva Testing ?

August 2, 2010

1) Do you or your patients suffer from fatigue?
2) Do you see an increasing frequency of allergies, acne or anxiety?
3) Are you aware that the common complaints of insomnia or depression can have a hormonal basis?

When “Yes” is the answer to any of these questions, saliva testing can assist with the solution.

Hormones rule our lives and imbalances therein change everything, whether we realize it or not! The sex hormones; Progesterone, Estradiol and Testosterone all play a critical role in taking us from puberty through old age. Cortisol and DHEA, produced by the adrenal glands, provide us with a foundation to handle the myriad of challenges (stress) that we face on a daily basis. If everything is in balance – life is great! However, rarely is it so. Both as society and modern living become increasingly complex (multitude of stimuli and stressors) and as we age, imbalances in hormones become commonplace. And the results are we feel unwell, unfit and unhappy!

Conditions associated with the imbalances saliva testing will identify:

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
• PMS
• Fibromyaligia
• Rheumatoid Arthritis
• Autoimmune disease
• Thyroid Insufficiency
• Infertility
• Inflammatory Bowel Disease
• Insulin Resistance
• PCOS
• Metabolic Syndrome
• Menopause
• Andropause
• Depression
• Anxiety Disorder

Fatigue is a barometer of our overall health. Everyone has had the experience of being tired…tired and worn out. If you get a couple good nights of sleep and you feel better again - problem solved. However, for most people the feeling of tiredness and fatigue never goes away, and a good night’s sleep is a thing of the past. When this happens it is clear that the adrenal glands are no longer functioning optimally. And if this is the case the balance of the sex steroid hormones (Estrogen, Progesteone, Testosterone and DHEA) is also thrown off balance. There are several stages of adrenal fatigue and yet the symptoms for each phase often look the same. Testing Cortisol levels over the course of the day will show you both volume of Cortisol produced and the diurnal pattern. This gives you key information for designing the best treatment plan.

You can see how Total Male, Total Female, Total GHR, Total Arginine, Total Andro-Bal, Total Fem-Bal, Total Tri-Estro, Total Veggie and Total Green, DSF, the Homeopathic Heavy Metals, Fish Oils, Total Chelate etc fit into this picture…

It is also plain to see Jay Mead, MD is a major contributor to today's Puzzle Piece. He is already preparing for our January 28-30, 2011 Homecoming in Phoenix, Arizona, where we will launch a major life and practice changing Seminar. This will give you a new and vast look at you, your family and your patients with FUNCTIONAL DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. We will also have Dr. Dicken Weatherby teaching blood work, along with the Brimhall Wellness team doing an ADVANCED-ADVANCED TECHNIQUE SEMINAR simultaneously.

Keep your eyes on the Puzzle Pieces of what is coming to expand your practice and income. Also you can find out more about the Labrix Comprehensive Hormone Panel at www.labrix.com. Look for their coming newsletters which will contain case studies (with treatment protocols) of menopause, adrenal fatigue and other common hormone imbalances.

At Nutri-West/Brimhall, we have so much happening to assist YOU in HELPING your PATIENTS AND PRACTICE.

Nutri-West Presents: Total Fiber

by Brimhall Wellness Tue, July 27 2010 18:33
Nutri-West Presents: Total Fiber

July 26, 2010

Fiber is a key element in intestinal health and TOTAL HEALTH. Dietary fibers are either soluble or insoluble, with most plant sources containing a mixture of both types. Fiber is available in many foods, especially fruits and vegetables, with some plant material containing very high levels of fiber, such as flaxseed, glucomannan, beta glucans, cocomut fiber, gum arabic, rice bran and apple pectin, among others. Fiber increases the “good bacteria” in the intestinal tract and produces butyric acid, a short chain fatty acid which is manufactured by the intestines through bacterial fermentation of fiber and is necessary for the healthy maintenance of the intestinal wall. Butyric acid is the main energy source for the colon epithelial cells and helps repair and regenerate damaged cells. Fiber softens stools and decreases transit time, guarding against constipation while at the same time being beneficial for diarrhea. Fiber also exercises the colon wall as well, preventing inflammatory pouches and and a “lazy” colon.

The colon is a major elimination pathway for toxins, and supporting the colon with fiber helps both toxin binding and toxin removal, in the elimination process. Fiber is useful in detox protocols to flush toxic waste from the body. Ridding the body of excess toxic waste helps to maximize efficiency of all biochemical processes, maintaining general health and well-being. Most health organizations recommend increasing the fiber intake in the diet for optimal health.

Fiber slows gastric emptying, and it is helpful for blood sugar regulation and healthy cholesterol/triglyceride levels. Fiber can beneficially influence satiety, which is important in the support of weight balance. Fiber binds excess estrogen for removal, and many female complaints are due to estrogen dominance. Whether pre- or post-menopausal, fiber is beneficial for female hormonal balance. All colon conditions can usually be addressed with fiber support as a beneficial addition, however, it is important to note that even though fiber is important for colon health, if the colon is actively inflamed, such as with Inflammatory Bowel Syndrome, it is best to rest the gut with protein powders during those active bouts.

Inulin is a form of soluble fiber and is categorized as a prebiotic, which means that it promotes the growth of good bacteria in the gut (probiotics). There is evidence that inulin may increase calcium and magnesium absorption (1,2).

Rice Bran contains a high level of dietary fibers such as beta-glucan, pectin and gum. Constituents of these fibers include tocotrienols (a natural fraction of vitamin E), gamma-oryzanol and beta-sitosterol; all these ingredients have been noted to have a positive correlation to the lipid profile (cholesterol) (3).

Coconut Fiber is full of lignans and cellulose, with many health properties; indeed, some varieties of coconut have even been demonstrated to have “antinociceptive (analgesic) and anti-inflammatory activities which confirm the popular use of this plant” (4).

Flax Seed is used to provide bulk and counteract constipation because of its dietary fiber content (5). A 2009 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that flax seeds may lower cholesterol levels, especially in women (6). Other studies suggest that flax seeds may be beneficial in other conditions as well, including stabilization of blood-sugar levels (7).

Apple Pectin is a soluble fiber that acts as a digestive aid and intestinal regulator. It slows gastric emptying, which is good for blood sugar and healthy cholesterol levels, and helps remove unwanted toxins from the colon. A research article published in Carcinogenesis, Apr 2010, describes a fraction of apple pectin as “highly effective against intestinal toxicities”, and “active against inflammation”, and reported that it “may be useful for treatment of colitis” (8). Yet another 2010 study, in Anaerobe, pointed out that apple pectin is one of the effective apple components improving the large intestine environment (9). Apple pectin is believed to increase the absorption capacity of the small intestine, and in fact has been shown to increase levels of quercetin, a powerful plant bioflavonoid (10).

Acacia Gum is a natural gum taken from two species of the acacia tree. It is a fiber that has pro-absorptive and antimicrobial properties (11).

Freeze Dried Apple: Both apple fiber and gum arabic lowered total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in men with moderately high cholesterol levels (12).

Chia Seed is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and amino acids, and contains significant levels of antioxidants and dietary fiber (mostly soluble). The antioxidants include caffeic acids, myricetin, quercetin, and kaempferol flavonols. A systematic review showed that “the available human and non-human studies show possible effectiveness for allergies, angina, athletic performance enhancement, coronary heart disease (CHD), heart attack, hormonal/endocrine disorders, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, stroke, and vasodilatation” (13). Some evidence also suggests possible anticoagulant and antiviral effects of chia (14).

Glucomannan is a water-soluble dietary fiber derived from konjac root and has the highest molecular weight and strongest viscosity among any dietary fiber known to science. Glucomannan can absorb up to 200 times its weight in water, which is one of the ways it increases bulk and slows insulin response. It promoted bowel movement and improved colonic ecology in constipated adults in a placebo-controlled, diet-controlled trial (15).

Natural Banana – bananas are high in fiber, potassium and phosphorus, and contain other vitamins and minerals as well. Banana is also a good source of healthful flavonoids and pre-biotics (16).
Spirulina is green, full of fiber, vitamins and minerals, has high anti-oxidant capacity and has been extensively researched. 2010 studies show that spirulina is helpful for inflammation, cholesterol, and toxic assault, amongst other health benefits (17). Spirulina has been proven to be, “effective to treat certain allergies, anemia, hepatotoxicity, viral and cardiovascular diseases, hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, immunodeficiency, and inflammatory processes, among others” (18). These activities are attributed to some of the components in spirulina, including an isolated complex called Ca-Spirulan.

Beta Glucans are not only high in fiber and well-known for being soluble fiber supplements, they lower bad cholesterol and raise good cholesterol (19). Beta glucans increase the phagocytosis of antigens (20) which is one of the ways in which it modulates the immune system. In fact, beta glucans have “been shown to enhance the envelopment and digestion (phagocytosis) of pathogenic microorganisms that cause infectious disease” (21), and positively affect the immune cascade, especially T cells, B cells and dendritic cells (22).

Agave Nectar (real nectar) a raw natural sweetener.

Dosage: One tablet three times per day, unless otherwise recommended (such as a bowel cleanse). It is important to drink plenty of filtered water with fiber supplements.

Contraindications: Acute stages of inflammatory bowel disease. High fiber may slow absorption of some drugs; take the supplement away from the drug by several hours.

Total Fiber is for you, your family and your patients. It is easy to take and removes all of the old reasons you did not get enough fiber.

Health and Happiness from the Wellness Team of Nutri-West/Brimhall!

2. Using N-Compass Health or the eWellnessSystem (www.eWellnessSystem.com), make nutritional information available in your reception area and other treatment areas that may be applicable. This information should be relating to specific Health Concerns to better connect with and relate to the patient! Examples: Allergies, Cold/Flu, Fatigue, Depression, Stress, Fibromyalgia, Diabetes, etc.

3. Post a ‘Condition of the Month’ (made available by Nutri-West) in your reception area! Use this to promote and educate patients on specific conditions and nutrition! This is also a great way for doctors and staff to become more familiar with nutrition! Your condition of the month can also be part of a doctor/staff training where this information is reviewed and discussed! The more doctors and staff understand nutrition and it’s benefits, the more they will feel comfortable to discuss this with patients!! You can get this information from www.eWellnessSystem.com.

4. Make sure you have the Nutri-West Silver Bullets Manual in your practice. This is one way to further educate patients on what you’re recommending to them and why! It is a great resource! Read the Nutri-Notes that come with every Nutri-West order you place! This is great for doctor, staff and patient education! If you aren’t getting the Nutri-Notes or don’t have the Silver Bullets Manual, be sure to ask your distributor right away!

II. Increasing Efficiency in the Billing Department
Electronic Claims Submission --> DONE RIGHT!

The Brimhall Team’s job is to teach YOU how to treat the patients for increased results. Brandy’s job is to increase your profits. This second portion of this week's Puzzle Piece is on why and how to do Electronic Claims Submission.

There are so many tasks to be organized and addressed in a billing department, such as claims submission, insurance verifications, claims appeals, reviewing of Accounts Receivable and claims re-submissions, patient account statements and collections, etc. Some of these duties can be extremely time consuming which is why it is so important to insure that every step and every system in the billing department is as efficient and effective as possible. By evaluating this, you are sure to prevent or reduce lost time in carry out of systems, streamline the systems within the department and gain confidence that these procedures are being executed smoothly and correctly. One element to evaluate in your billing department is electronic claims submissions. Getting paid by
Insurance carriers and getting paid faster is a crucial component to efficiency and productivity in a billing department.

Are you getting rejected claims? Are you finding that many of your claims still aren't being received by insurance payers? Do you have a good relationship with your insurance clearinghouse where your questions are answered and assistance is quickly provided, if needed?

If any of the above questions are obstacles that you face, you would be well served to reconsider your current clearinghouse. Or, maybe you are ready to transition from paper to electronic claims submission and are unclear about the steps you need to take. Either way, you may find comfort and confidence with APEX EDI. The following will outline only a few features that are offered by Apex EDI that will certainly help to insure efficiency in the claims submission process! Benefits and features of Apex EDI include:

1. No annual maintenance fees
2. Money back guarantee
3. Online Corrections resulting in:
     a. No double submission on a single claim
     b. No double charges for a single claim (because of double submission)
4. Flat Rate with Unlimited Claims submissions
5. Compatible with ALL Practice Management Software (even those that offer clearing house services)
6. Verification of claims delivery
7. FREE client support
8. Connects to all insurance companies, nation and state wide.
a. Claims are no longer being dropped to paper and printed for submission
b. Reduces paper claims expense

Apex EDI will do a risk free, FREE claims service evaluation upon your request! Please call them at 800-840-9152. Additionally, by mentioning referral code 104, you will receive 2 months of FREE service, if you sign up with them! You can also preview Apex EDI online at www.apexedi.com.

This is a very helpful step in streamlining your billing department. Please subscribe to the Total Practice Resources Spotlight newsletter, as we will continue to cover other important steps that can be taken to make your office as efficient and profitable as possible!

KEEP BOTTLED WATER OUT OF THE HOT CAR = DIOXINS

July 12, 2010

PLASTICS have been identified as one of the most common causes of high levels of dioxins in the tissues.

The heat reacts with the chemicals in the plastic of the bottle which releases dioxin into the water.

Dioxin is a toxin increasingly found in breast cancer tissue.

USE a stainless steel container or a glass bottle instead of plastic!

NO plastic containers in the microwave.

NO plastic wrap in microwave.

Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic.

Use glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food.

Patients that eat such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should remove them from the container and heat them in a glass container. You have no idea what is in the paper/cardboard etc. that surrounds pre packaged food.

Detox is one of the Six Steps To Wellness. Nutri-West is releasing a new DETOX PROGRAM this next month. Please get all of the details at a Nutri-West/Brimhall Seminar and watch for the Puzzle Pieces and Nutri-West mailings.

She was living in an apartment at college that was found to have black mold. Shortly after she moved in, her symptoms took a turn for the worse as did her allergies. She has moved out and improved but is still dealing with chronic fatigue, headaches, and weakness in her legs. She overheats easily, as is common with many MS patients.

On her latest episode she was given an IV push of corticosteroids to control inflammation and leg pain.

Upon health scan, weak points revealed Total Yeast Redux strengthening mold point, Adreno Plus enhancing adrenal weakness and she was also weak with Total Aluminum, which balanced the toxicity point. All other points tested strong.

Detox footbaths, laser and adjustments were started as was nutrition. What else should we look for or add?

ANSWER: Make sure she is wearing a multipolar magnet night and day. Electromagnetic imbalance and sensitivities are common and severe in many of these types of patients. With a homeopathic metal testing positive, we have found giving the Homeopathic metal and giving Total Chelate (usual dosage is one three times per day) is helpful on almost every patient. As the metals are released, it is important to have adequate fatty acids and to give Total Chelate to help release the metals from the body. Test for Total Flaxseed oil, fish oils (Nutri-West Complete line) and F Complex.

Give the number of drops that tests with the Total Aluminum. Then do A/SERT with the Total Aluminum and the oil that tested as well. I would definitely test further for the liver after you give the Total Aluminum drops.

The usual dosage is one to two tablets up to three times per day of Total Liver D-Tox and also Total Chelate at a similar dosage. I would do a therapy localization challenge of the brain after you give the Total Aluminum or whatever heavy metal shows. We have found one to three drops under the tongue of the Homeopathic will unlock hidden findings and demonstrate, with muscle response testing, which areas of the brain will respond to Cold Laser. Total Brain can be very supportive to the correction after lasering. Eyelights can be very helpful here as well. I have discussed this testing and treating procedure in previous Puzzle Pieces. They are archived for your convenience at www.brimhall.com under Newsletters or call 866-338-4883 to reach our office for assistance or questions.

With any MS patient, I would test for GLUTEN SENSITIVITIES. This can be an undiagnosed condition, and if uncovered, can change the patient’s life tremendously. I have seen many MS patients have gluten or nightshade sensitivities. The patient can order the gluten test on the internet at WWW.ENTEROLAB.COM . Have them order the test, complete the stool sample and the salivary swab. The stool sample will give you a positive if it is a factor and the swab shows the genetic predisposition.

Be sure and support the digestion of these patients with Total Probiotics at two first thing upon arising for 90 days and one per day always. HCL such as Hypo D or Ges-Cid, and Total Enzymes should be considered as well.

We look forward to seeing all of you at a Nutri-West/Brimhall Seminar soon. Many new innovations will be discussed and demonstrated including our New DETOX PROGRAM, TOTAL FIBER, and FUNCTIONAL DIAGNOSTICS SEMINARS ETC.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median salary for Chiropractors in the United States is approximately $68,000 annually. Statistics show that the averages from state to state, do indeed vary, but as we consider the statistics above, we may find ourselves all having one common thought... "What can we do to be more profitable?"
We would all love for there to be just a few short steps to take to help us create the practice of our dreams immediately. Although the answer isn't that simple, there are things that you can do with and for your practice to make a big difference right away. As we know, lost time also results in lost profitability so we want to be sure to evaluate your practice systems inside and out, carefully reviewing everything that happens from the moment the patient calls to schedule their appointment.

Read the few questions below and answer them for your practice:
-Are you confident in the level of staff training?
-Are you comfortable with the services you offer in your practice?
-Are you confident in your patient education procedures? (Consider your Report of Findings, tangible materials such as brochures, how doctor(s) and staff explain services and answer patient questions, etc)
-Are you able to monitor your statistics to evaluate growth, stability, and decline?
-Do you have a clear vision of the type of practice you would like to have and have you shared this with your team? Does your team share your Dream? If not why are they still there?
-Do you feel like the systems in your practice are the most up to date, efficient, effective and thorough?
-Do you feel confident that you are connecting with and getting your message out to potential patients?
-Are you satisfied with your per visit average and monthly collections?
-Are you knowledgeable in nutrition and Functional evaluation of your patients?
-Is you nutrition sales where it should be to help your patients to the maximum possible?

If you answered "No" to any of the questions above, don't feel discouraged, but instead, feel empowered that you now have a starting point to begin to prioritize and work with, for your practice. Make note of the specific areas of breakdown, potential obstacles or areas of your practice where you would like to see improvement. This is a starting point for you to begin plan your action steps for improvement. GIVE US A CALL TODAY AND LET US HELP YOU!

Please be sure to stay tuned to future TPR Spotlight Editions for additional steps for finding your uncollected profits. We, at Total Practice Resources, would love to speak with you as well about your practice growth and development. We do offer a free consultation to discuss your specific practice needs and how we may help you meet those. Please be sure to call (303) 242-8901 or email Brandy at brandy_tpr@yahoo.com.

Additionally, you will find our new, interactive website to be a tremendous resource to you with many of your practice growth and development needs. From systems and structure to coding, compliance, collections and statistics as well as MUCH more! View this new site at www.ChiroNetwork.info!

What is Narcolepsy and What Can We Do About It?

What is NARCOLEPSY and What Can We Do About It?

June 21, 2010

Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder that affects the control of sleep and wakefulness. People with narcolepsy experience excessive daytime sleepiness and intermittent, uncontrollable episodes of falling asleep during the daytime. These sudden sleep attacks may occur during any type of activity at any time of the day. This factor makes it very dangerous and threatening to the patient’s life and wellbeing.

It is estimated that narcolepsy affects 1 in every 2000 Americans. Patients report other symptoms of mental cloudiness, a lack of energy and concentration, memory lapses, a depressed mood, and/or extreme exhaustion. Other symptoms may present such as Cataplexy or sudden loss of muscle tone and feeling weak all over, Hallucinations in wakefulness and sleep, Sleep Paralysis, which involve an inability to move or speak while falling asleep or waking up. You can see this set of symptomatic expression limits a persons activities and safety while trying to live a normal life.

What causes narcolepsy?
Medically the cause of narcolepsy is not known. Researchers have listed both genetic and epigenetic connections. It is thought that sometimes the bodies own immune system mistakenly attacks the brain cells involved in regulating the sleep-wake cycle. It is believed that narcolepsy is the result of these cells being involved.

Drugs such as NUVIGIL are used to improve wakefulness in patients with narcolepsy. It has not been considered a treatment for narcolepsy itself or its other symptoms or consequences but has been used to increase wakefulness.

In our normal sleep cycle, we initially enter superficial stages of sleep followed by deeper sleep stages and ultimately (after about 90 minutes) rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. For people having narcolepsy, REM sleep occurs almost immediately in the sleep cycle as well as periodically during the waking hours. It is in REM sleep that we can experience dreams and muscle paralysis, which explains some of the symptoms of narcolepsy.

Narcolepsy usually manifests between the ages of 15 and 25 but can present at any age.

Natural Treatment
This is a condition that I have seen personally in practice. Dr. Goodheart wrote papers on Narcolepsy and thought the place to start was digestion. He was especially mindful of Small Intestine function. Many people get sleepy after eating because of over eating, not digesting their food properly and having food sensitivities or allergies. With this insight I always tested for Total Enzymes for the digestion of proteins, carbohydrates and fats, Hypo D for HCL, Total Probiotics for proper bowel flora, Total Leaky Gut for the small intestine and L Glutamine Plus for the large bowel.

I have found heavy metals and toxic burden in every Narcolepsy patient treated. The use of Nutri-West’s Homeopath metals as they test positive, Total Chelate, Total Flax, Fish Oils, Total Greens and Total Systemic Detox are found to be very helpful.

It is important to consider Total Brain after doing a brain balance with the laser protocol, including cranial nerve evaluation and treatment. It can be very helpful to add the Eyelights, since the patient can continue this at home daily. This treatment and this overall protocol discussed have been very helpful in snoring and sleep apnea as well. As mentioned at the beginning of the article, an auto immune response is seen in some patients and we must consider Total CMO and the over all causes of our body attacking itself.

Under eating, testing for food sensitivities and allergies (A/SERT), eliminating or testing for gluten sensitivities, specific nutrition to assist the immune system in clearing infections such as Total Yeast, Total Multimune, Total Virx, Total Bac-T and Total Para should be considered and tested for.
As you can see, all SIX STEPS need evaluation and treatment in Narcolepsy and these other referenced conditions. Cranio-sacral treatment (especially the sagittal suture and treat the corpus callosum with cold laser), foot baths, subluxation correction, electromagnetic balancing, emotional stress reduction and major detoxification are all necessary considerations.

We cover all of this and more in the Nutri-West/Brimhall Seminars. We have now added Functional Diagnostic Testing to our seminars, which are a great help to evaluate the TOTAL PERSON. Blood testing, Salivary Evaluation and Hair Analysis are often necessary to look at the picture the body is painting, especially when there are major complications and web-like interactions.

We look forward to seeing you soon,

John W. Brimhall, BA, BS, DC, FIAMA, DIBAK
