Hormones rule our lives and imbalances therein change everything, whether we realize it or not! The sex hormones; Progesterone, Estradiol and Testosterone all play a critical role in taking us from puberty through old age. Cortisol and DHEA, produced by the adrenal glands, provide us with a foundation to handle the myriad of challenges (stress) that we face on a daily basis. If everything is in balance – life is great! However, rarely is it so. Both as society and modern living become increasingly complex (multitude of stimuli and stressors) and as we age, imbalances in hormones become commonplace. And the results are we feel unwell, unfit and unhappy!

Conditions associated with the imbalances saliva testing will identify:

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
• PMS
• Fibromyaligia
• Rheumatoid Arthritis
• Autoimmune disease
• Thyroid Insufficiency
• Infertility
• Inflammatory Bowel Disease
• Insulin Resistance
• PCOS
• Metabolic Syndrome
• Menopause
• Andropause
• Depression
• Anxiety Disorder

Fatigue is a barometer of our overall health. Everyone has had the experience of being tired…tired and worn out. If you get a couple good nights of sleep and you feel better again - problem solved. However, for most people the feeling of tiredness and fatigue never goes away, and a good night’s sleep is a thing of the past. When this happens it is clear that the adrenal glands are no longer functioning optimally. And if this is the case the balance of the sex steroid hormones (Estrogen, Progesteone, Testosterone and DHEA) is also thrown off balance. There are several stages of adrenal fatigue and yet the symptoms for each phase often look the same. Testing Cortisol levels over the course of the day will show you both volume of Cortisol produced and the diurnal pattern. This gives you key information for designing the best treatment plan.

You can see how Total Male, Total Female, Total GHR, Total Arginine, Total Andro-Bal, Total Fem-Bal, Total Tri-Estro, Total Veggie and Total Green, DSF, the Homeopathic Heavy Metals, Fish Oils, Total Chelate etc fit into this picture…

Nutri-West Presents: Total Fiber

by Brimhall Wellness Tue, July 27 2010 18:33
Nutri-West Presents: Total Fiber

July 26, 2010

Fiber is a key element in intestinal health and TOTAL HEALTH. Dietary fibers are either soluble or insoluble, with most plant sources containing a mixture of both types. Fiber is available in many foods, especially fruits and vegetables, with some plant material containing very high levels of fiber, such as flaxseed, glucomannan, beta glucans, cocomut fiber, gum arabic, rice bran and apple pectin, among others. Fiber increases the “good bacteria” in the intestinal tract and produces butyric acid, a short chain fatty acid which is manufactured by the intestines through bacterial fermentation of fiber and is necessary for the healthy maintenance of the intestinal wall. Butyric acid is the main energy source for the colon epithelial cells and helps repair and regenerate damaged cells. Fiber softens stools and decreases transit time, guarding against constipation while at the same time being beneficial for diarrhea. Fiber also exercises the colon wall as well, preventing inflammatory pouches and and a “lazy” colon.

The colon is a major elimination pathway for toxins, and supporting the colon with fiber helps both toxin binding and toxin removal, in the elimination process. Fiber is useful in detox protocols to flush toxic waste from the body. Ridding the body of excess toxic waste helps to maximize efficiency of all biochemical processes, maintaining general health and well-being. Most health organizations recommend increasing the fiber intake in the diet for optimal health.

Fiber slows gastric emptying, and it is helpful for blood sugar regulation and healthy cholesterol/triglyceride levels. Fiber can beneficially influence satiety, which is important in the support of weight balance. Fiber binds excess estrogen for removal, and many female complaints are due to estrogen dominance. Whether pre- or post-menopausal, fiber is beneficial for female hormonal balance. All colon conditions can usually be addressed with fiber support as a beneficial addition, however, it is important to note that even though fiber is important for colon health, if the colon is actively inflamed, such as with Inflammatory Bowel Syndrome, it is best to rest the gut with protein powders during those active bouts.

Inulin is a form of soluble fiber and is categorized as a prebiotic, which means that it promotes the growth of good bacteria in the gut (probiotics). There is evidence that inulin may increase calcium and magnesium absorption (1,2).

Rice Bran contains a high level of dietary fibers such as beta-glucan, pectin and gum. Constituents of these fibers include tocotrienols (a natural fraction of vitamin E), gamma-oryzanol and beta-sitosterol; all these ingredients have been noted to have a positive correlation to the lipid profile (cholesterol) (3).

Coconut Fiber is full of lignans and cellulose, with many health properties; indeed, some varieties of coconut have even been demonstrated to have “antinociceptive (analgesic) and anti-inflammatory activities which confirm the popular use of this plant” (4).

Flax Seed is used to provide bulk and counteract constipation because of its dietary fiber content (5). A 2009 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that flax seeds may lower cholesterol levels, especially in women (6). Other studies suggest that flax seeds may be beneficial in other conditions as well, including stabilization of blood-sugar levels (7).

Apple Pectin is a soluble fiber that acts as a digestive aid and intestinal regulator. It slows gastric emptying, which is good for blood sugar and healthy cholesterol levels, and helps remove unwanted toxins from the colon. A research article published in Carcinogenesis, Apr 2010, describes a fraction of apple pectin as “highly effective against intestinal toxicities”, and “active against inflammation”, and reported that it “may be useful for treatment of colitis” (8). Yet another 2010 study, in Anaerobe, pointed out that apple pectin is one of the effective apple components improving the large intestine environment (9). Apple pectin is believed to increase the absorption capacity of the small intestine, and in fact has been shown to increase levels of quercetin, a powerful plant bioflavonoid (10).

Acacia Gum is a natural gum taken from two species of the acacia tree. It is a fiber that has pro-absorptive and antimicrobial properties (11).

Freeze Dried Apple: Both apple fiber and gum arabic lowered total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in men with moderately high cholesterol levels (12).

Chia Seed is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and amino acids, and contains significant levels of antioxidants and dietary fiber (mostly soluble). The antioxidants include caffeic acids, myricetin, quercetin, and kaempferol flavonols. A systematic review showed that “the available human and non-human studies show possible effectiveness for allergies, angina, athletic performance enhancement, coronary heart disease (CHD), heart attack, hormonal/endocrine disorders, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, stroke, and vasodilatation” (13). Some evidence also suggests possible anticoagulant and antiviral effects of chia (14).

Glucomannan is a water-soluble dietary fiber derived from konjac root and has the highest molecular weight and strongest viscosity among any dietary fiber known to science. Glucomannan can absorb up to 200 times its weight in water, which is one of the ways it increases bulk and slows insulin response. It promoted bowel movement and improved colonic ecology in constipated adults in a placebo-controlled, diet-controlled trial (15).

Natural Banana – bananas are high in fiber, potassium and phosphorus, and contain other vitamins and minerals as well. Banana is also a good source of healthful flavonoids and pre-biotics (16).
Spirulina is green, full of fiber, vitamins and minerals, has high anti-oxidant capacity and has been extensively researched. 2010 studies show that spirulina is helpful for inflammation, cholesterol, and toxic assault, amongst other health benefits (17). Spirulina has been proven to be, “effective to treat certain allergies, anemia, hepatotoxicity, viral and cardiovascular diseases, hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, immunodeficiency, and inflammatory processes, among others” (18). These activities are attributed to some of the components in spirulina, including an isolated complex called Ca-Spirulan.

Beta Glucans are not only high in fiber and well-known for being soluble fiber supplements, they lower bad cholesterol and raise good cholesterol (19). Beta glucans increase the phagocytosis of antigens (20) which is one of the ways in which it modulates the immune system. In fact, beta glucans have “been shown to enhance the envelopment and digestion (phagocytosis) of pathogenic microorganisms that cause infectious disease” (21), and positively affect the immune cascade, especially T cells, B cells and dendritic cells (22).

Agave Nectar (real nectar) a raw natural sweetener.

Dosage: One tablet three times per day, unless otherwise recommended (such as a bowel cleanse). It is important to drink plenty of filtered water with fiber supplements.

Contraindications: Acute stages of inflammatory bowel disease. High fiber may slow absorption of some drugs; take the supplement away from the drug by several hours.

Total Fiber is for you, your family and your patients. It is easy to take and removes all of the old reasons you did not get enough fiber.

The Incredible Vitamin D

by Brimhall Wellness Tue, April 27 2010 19:07

April 26, 2010

The main function of vitamin D is to maintain normal levels of calcium and phosphorus in the blood to support bone mineralization, cell functions, and proper nerve and muscle function. Vitamin D acts as a hormone, enhancing the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in the small intestine.

Vitamin D is needed for normal growth.

Osteoporosis
Vitamin D deficiency can lead to the development of osteoporosis because it reduces calcium absorption. Higher vitamin D levels have been associated with stronger bones (greater bone mineral density).

In most studies, the effects of vitamin D and calcium can't be separated.

Cancer
Preliminary evidence suggests vitamin D may aid in cancer prevention by blocking cell growth and differentiation.

Since the late 1980s, the risk of developing and dying from breast, prostate, ovarian, and other cancers has been found to be increased in geographic areas located at higher latitudes, where there's less sun exposure, and with vitamin D deficiency.

A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that vitamin D may reduce the incidence of cancer.

Autoimmune Disease
Vitamin D has been shown to influence the immune system, there is some evidence it may help with autoimmune conditions.

Other Possible Conditions To Consider Vitamin D

• Osteoporosis prevention and treatment
• Cancer prevention
• Diabetes prevention
• Polycystic ovary disease
• Depression and other mood disorders
• Gum disease prevention
• Psoriasis
• Seasonal affective disorder
• Fibromyalgia
• Immune function

We use Nutri-West’s Vitamin D 400. I have seen the vast majority of patients tested, whether regular blood tests or the Labrix blood spot testing, to show inadequate vitamin D levels. I am currently taking 6 D 400’s myself daily. I was kidding myself, living in Arizona, that my levels would be adequate.

We look forward to seeing you at a Nutri-West/Brimhall Seminar soon. We have discovered a heavy metal challenge that uncovers hidden switching, neurological disorganization, stressed organs and nutritional indications.

Yours in health and wellness,

Resveratrol, Mitochondria, Increased Energy, Anti-Aging and Being Slim

by Brimhall Wellness Fri, March 12 2010 19:44
Resveratrol, Mitochondria, Increased Energy, Anti Aging and Being Slim

AUGUST 3, 2009

You might have heard of the many studies done with rats that were fed doses of resveratrol, a plant compound found in red wine.

A Harvard researcher, David Sinclair has been one of the leading investigators in this area.  Some of the results demonstrated by the studies are:  1) Increased insulin sensitivity leading to better blood sugar control.  2)  Increased AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a signaling system in the body that controls insulin sensitivity and can prevent diabetes.  3) Increased peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-coactivator 1 (PGC-1) activity. This is a critical signaling system that turns on genes that improve blood sugar control and improve mitochondrial function.  4) Increased the numbers of mitochondria, which boosts the capacity to turn food into energy and to burn calories.  5) Improved motor function, making the old rats more agile.  6) And finally, the resveratrol helped prevent the effects of aging by modifying 144 out of 153 metabolic pathways that are controlled by genes.

These rats also lived 30 percent longer on average.  This is equivalent to a human living 120 years.  These rats became fitter and lost weight.  Resveratrol increases MITOCHONDRIA and mitochondrial resuscitation, which is the source of our energy.  It has been observed that resveratrol protects and improves the function of the mitochondria through its effects on some of the anti-aging genes.

The key to more energy lies in providing your mitochondria the right environment to thrive. When you do, you can boost your energy metabolism and your overall status of health.  This is why we combined Resveratrol with the other nutrients found in Total Veggie.  Total Veggie is a combination of resveratrol, cordycepts, wheat grass, Maitake and Shitake mushrooms, the sprouts of the crucifierous vegetables and many, many other synergistic nutrients that makes one of the best overall products I have ever tested or used in my 36 years of patient treatment.

What Are Mitochondria?

Mitochondria are the little factories in our cells that take the foods we eat and the oxygen we breathe and convert them into energy. That energy is called adenosine triphosphate, or ATP, and it is used to support every function in our body.

Each and every cell contains hundreds or thousands of mitochondria.  There are greater amounts in active organs and tissues such as the muscles, heart, and brain. The least amount is in the eyes and is why our eyes can fatigue so easily.  We have more than 100,000 trillion mitochondria in our bodies, and each one contains 17,000 miniature assembly lines for making ATP; and this is where metabolism takes place.  When they are damaged, you suffer all the symptoms of low energy, fatigue, memory loss, pain, rapid aging, and a long list of other undesirable events.

Fatigue is the most common symptom of poorly functioning mitochondria, and is seen in acute as well chronic fatigue.  Every chronic degenerative disease has in its blueprint an underlying mitochondrial resuscitation deficiency. The main way your mitochondria are damaged is by uncontrolled oxidative stress. That may sound complicated, but in reality we are all familiar with “oxidative stress”.

Oxidation is what causes rust on our cars, the brown color that appears on an apple when cut and exposed to air, windshield wipers to get hard, the rancid vegetable oil in our cupboards and the wrinkles that form on our face with age.

Our own tissues are rusting, our own fats are going rancid, and our brains are becoming less functional every day.  The ultimate end product of oxidative stress and the complete loss of mitochondrial function and energy production is death.  The key is to keep the mitochondrial function at its peak as long as possible.  This is why we formulated Total Mitochondria, Total Green, along with Total Veggie.  These three nutrient dense supplements definitely are in the top five of all nutrition used in my lifetime.  Total Veggie/Green and Total Mitochondria together touch an extreme number of bases for proper pH balance and many other benefits because of the alkalizing crucifierous vegetables and the other alkaline greens contained in the formula.  Now couple this with the Resveratrol content in T Veggie, supported by all of the other nutrients and cofactors and add this to Total Mitochondria, you have a complete and total support for mitochondrial resuscitation, mitochondrial function, energy, longevity, slimness and all of the benefits listed above…  You can also add Super Ox, which is one of Nutri-West’s best antioxidant formulas.

This is just one more of the pieces of the puzzle we continue to research and define for YOU. We look forward to seeing you soon at one of the Nutri-West/Brimhall Seminars!
